Bringing ICT knowledge into the classroom

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), in response to the growth of the economy and society, has developed an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Education strategy and is now integrating it into the national curriculum for students from Grade 4 to Grade 12.

In order to help students to have deeper understanding on ICT, InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia, in partnership with MoEYS and KAPE (Kampuchean Action for Primary Education), plans to pilot Computer Programming to students from Grades 7-11 at New Generation School (NGS). Under the support from SPIDER, an independent public center with innovative programmes in Africa, Asia and Latin America, the Computer Programming had already been introduced to IT teachers and student at NGS.

InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia brought robot kits to NGS Schools last week. These robots will serve as tools to help students put their theoretical learning into practice.

After handing the robot kits, Suy Channe, regional lead of INSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia, shared that, “in this one year pilot programme from July 2018 to October 2019, our programme’s goal is to strengthen MoEYS teacher capacity to help students grow their interest in ICT and to teach them computer programing using real devices (robot kit).”

She added that after many discussions with MoEYS and KAPE, the first phase of th computer programing will be done for students from Grade 7 to Grade 11 at four New Generation School (NGS), which are all already equipped with computer laboratories.

Ms Channe explained in detail that the added curriculum is divided into two parts, which will be added to the lessons in the current curriculum implemented nationwide.

“For students from Grade 7 to Grade 8, we can improve their limited knowledge in the English language and computer by letting them learn about the basic of programme coding and web development. These coding lessons will help them develop their own mobile applications, websites, digital games and blogs. They will also have the chance to practice with robots.”

The second part of this new curriculm is focused on students from Grades 9 to 11 to have a basic knowledge about computer science. This group of students will learn about problem-solving, animation and games, event-driven programming, programming with data structures, user-centered design, and mobile application prototyping.

“To ensure that IT teachers provide the best quality of education on computer programming to students, InSTEDD iLab Southeast Asia and KAPE are working hand in hand to conduct Training to Trainers (ToT) to NGS IT teachers,” Ms Channe noted.

All IT teachers from Kampong Cham High School, Sisowath High School, Prek Anhjanh High School and Prek Leap High School, KAPE staff and officials from the IT department of MoEYS joined the training. The tools and the concepts of each lesson were introduced to the trainees.

Representing KAPE, Chhorn Chhayyuth, EdTech Coordinator, emphasised, “the ICT education has been introduced to students in this new school year. Ten IT teachers and 2,431 students from four NGS are to be trained on computer programming. So far, Sisowath High School was the first to execute the programme on October 1. The other three high schools started in mid-October.”
